Calling all European singletons

Are single people across Europe all looking for the same things in love? Are they happy or not with their singleton status? European dating site PARSHIP has unveiled results of its study on European singletons, shedding light onto these questions and more...

As to be expected, the PARSHIP study proves that different countries’ singles do have differing and quite specific criteria and expectations when it comes to love.  The study results also provides interesting insight on what’s going on inside the heads of UK singles… Useful information if you’re not sure what it is that UK women or men are looking for in a partner. Be prepared for some surprises!

And if you’re looking for a little cross-border romance or are dreaming of your own continental lover, you may want to read up on what they’re looking for in a partner.

The UK singles game

The results from PARSHIP’s UK study respondents points to an unexpected phenomena – women are more positive about being single than men and seem less bothered if they find someone or not. Where have all the Bridget Jones’s gone?

Over a third (38%) of the single UK men questioned are unhappy with their single status compared to only 30% of the UK women surveyed; and 39% of the British men thought that their chances of finding someone over the next 2 years were almost non-existent. Even the Irish have a more positive attitude than British men with only 27% citing the same level of despair.

In comparison, the longer a British woman stays single, the happier she gets, and of the women surveyed, 41% believed that their single status was a result of their desire for independence and time for themselves.

So if you are looking to catch a British lady, you might want to consider the following top five of the qualities they look for in a man:

  • Honesty – 97%
  • Good communicator – 95%
  • Fidelity – 90%
  • Openness – 88%
  • Sense of humour – 88%

The Nordic-Germanic singles game

Germany: German single men know what they want: their lady should be around 6 years younger than them, and for 63%, she needs to correspond to very specific physical criteria. For German single women, ethical behaviour (97%) and honesty (94%) are important (97%). That being said, German single ladies prefer to concentrate on their careers rather than searching for Herr Right!

Netherlands: Dutch singles generally look at life from a positive point of view. However, they come first in the European stingy stakes with only 36€ spent on a date. In Holland 56% of the single ladies surveyed feel that being a good lover isn’t a very important criteria in their future partner, and as with their UK sisters, they are globally satisfied with their single status.

Austria: Austrian single men are rather ambitious, with 56% according high importance to their professional evolution. They are also quite particular about their partner’s physique, preferring the more athletic types. On the Austrian single ladies’ front, 92% don’t want to financially support their partners, so it’s good that men seem to like work so much!

Switzerland: Nearly a third of Swiss single men seem rather attached to tradition with 35% of them feeling that in a couple with children, one of the parents (preferably mum) should stay at home. 49% of them regularly visit dating websites such as PARSHIP in the hope of meeting the love of their life.

The Latin singles game

Italy: Casanova is alive and well in Italy with 29% of Italian single men taking every occasion to meet women, and this predominantly for brief flings. And here’s a cultural exception – only 60% of Italian single women feel that communication is important in a relationship. That being said, they are much more particular about the physical appearance of their future partner.

France: French men don’t seem to cope well with singledom, with only 35% of them actually enjoying their single status, compared to 62% in the Netherlands. For 32% of these French singles, tradition still plays an important part in a couple’s relationship – and they appear quite serious in their quest for love with only 12% of them are looking for brief flings. French single ladies also know what they want in their ideal man: 59% of them want their own ‘Apollo’ and 98% wouldn’t accept a Mr Know-it-all.

Spain: Spanish single men are dedicated to the sensuality of their country’s women with 50 % of them looking for a Spanish partner. Added to that, she should be able to cook! And as for Spanish single ladies, well, they like to be the ones wearing the pants, like to be taken out for dinner and 36% of them aren’t looking for marital bliss.
